About Réunion Island

Réunion Island, a French territory over 9,000 kilometres (nearly 6,000 miles) from France, sits in the heart of the Indian Ocean. Yet, its culture couldn’t be more distinct. For centuries, people from Europe, Madagascar, East Africa, India, and China have settled here—some by choice, others through the tragedy of slavery. This extraordinary convergence of cultures has shaped not only our way of life but also our food.

Today, Réunion boasts one of the most harmonious and diverse cultures in the world. You’ll find Christians joining Hindu celebrations, Hindus celebrating with the Chinese community, and families from all backgrounds gathering to share meals. This vibrant mix has given birth to a culinary heritage unlike any other, where each dish carries the influence of multiple traditions.

The result? Recipes you’ve likely never heard of—flavours you’ve never experienced—because they simply don’t exist anywhere else.

The Chef Behind the Course

Meet MamyPomPom

Hi, I’m MamyPomPom, though my real name is Reinette—like the apple! My grandchildren affectionately gave me the nickname "Grandma Apple Apple," and it’s been a part of me ever since. I started cooking at the age of 7 and have been perfecting our traditional recipes for decades. These meals are more than food—they’re a way to preserve our heritage, and my greatest hope is that they will continue to be shared for generations to come. For years, I’ve delighted my family and friends with dishes that have become the heart of our gatherings. Now, I’m thrilled to share these flavours with you—helping you discover new tastes, cook with confidence, and break free from boring meals!

Meet Brian

I’m Brian, MamyPomPom’s son, an aerospace engineer, and a Ph.D. in rocket aerodynamics. These recipes first wowed my international friends during my studies in the UK and later impressed my colleagues at work. It was clear that everyone, no matter where they came from, adored these dishes.

Now, with my mom’s expert guidance, we're

thrilled to share these simple, healthy, and

delicious recipes with you. Every dish has

been recorded from my Ph.D. student dorm,

6,000 miles from Réunion Island,

to show that you don’t need a fancy kitchen

to create something extraordinary. Let’s

bring the flavours of our island to your table!
